Aromatherapy can be described as an alternative medical practice that takes a different approach to the mainstream medicine practices. In aromatherapy massage, the essential oil that is rubbed on brings about a relaxed feeling and helps alleviate stress. On top of that, the massage helps to increase the body's circulation and reduce the muscle tension.

A base oil is added the aromatherapy massage oil so that the overall mixture produces the desired therapeutic healing effects. These essential oils enter the body in either of the 2 ways. One is by being absorbed by the body during the massage process. Once in, they enter the bloodstream and are carried to the locations where they will serve the best. The other way these aromatherapy massage oils may enter the body is by being inhaled. This usually happens during the massage process too. It can thus be seen that aromatherapy has both the benefits of an average massage as well as the health benefits of the essential oils.

The use of the essential oils by aromatherapists and therapists is not new and most of them when recommending stress-relieving therapies, point out to their clients the benefits of an aromatherapy massage.

Aromatherapy massages also allow a person to make a decision as to what aromatherapy massage oil he or she wants used. The masseuse will usually comply with a client's decision. Massage parlors usually have large collections of essential oils available for their customers. Clients also have the option of having oils blended or mixed to come up with a product that serves the needs of the individual clients. Any remnants of the oil can usually be carried home, either for do-it-yourself massages or they can be used around the house for other purposes.

All essential oils used in aromatherapy treatments have been extracted from plants. There are a number of processes used to ensure the extracts are pure. Whether by distillation or by expression, the essential oils are then packed in bottles ready for use. These oils come in many flavors ranging from eucalyptus, grapefruit oils to myrtle.

An aromatherapy massage not only feel great being rubbed on, but is also has the benefit of enhancing the entire massage experience due to the scents that are released during the process. The essential oils are also beneficial in moisturizing and toning the skin.

A massage that employs the use of essential oils also feels and is more effective since the hands are able to move much smoother and easier. In addition, difficult points can be located and kneaded accordingly during the massage. The aromatherapy massage oil thus serves, both as a healing component, but also being easy and fun to work with.

Aromatherapy treatments and massages are different from others because they provide that mind and body connection. At the time of application, the oils get to the brain by inhaling. Eventually once absorbed, they can penetrate the body and bloodstream and affect the other body parts. Furthermore, the oils can be used as detergents or to wash around the house. The superiority of aromatherapy is thus, largely because of this mind body connection that other health options do not have.
